Best Smaller Cities Near Washington D.C.

May 26, 2022 by Kyle Leave a Comment

Washington DC is a bustling metropolitan area, a constant stream of not just folks who live and work there but tourists as well.

If you’re looking to settle into the general area, consider one of these smaller cities that’s a close drive and offers a quieter living experience.

Alexandria, VA

Take a look at Alexandria houses for sale if you want to reside in a place with a small-town feel that has all the big city amenities.

It’s filled with well-preserved historic buildings, antique shops, boutiques, and theaters.

The population varies widely in terms of ethnicity, and many professionals in the military, civil service, and private sectors live here in order to commute easily to work.

The job market is thriving here, with the Department of Defense and Institute for Defense Analyses being top employers. Companies like Pro-Sphere Tek, Culmen International, and the National Science Foundation are great places for those breaking into the tech realm.

Housing is a bit higher than the national average, but you’ll save money on utilities and health care when compared to the national average.

Frederick, Maryland

Frederick’s downtown is full of independent shops and restaurants, as well as historic buildings and high-tech firms to work at.

Frederick is still connected to its agricultural roots. There are many working farms and the Great Frederick Fair takes place every year.

Not only is the commute to DC an effortless one, it’s also easy to hop on a plane or train that are only an hour’s drive.

It’s affordable compared to DC and houses come in many sizes and prices with the median home average falling below the nation’s.

Silver Spring, Maryland

This DC suburb is home to young families and single adults. The housing market is on the higher side, and most people opt to rent instead of buy.

Many people move here because the school districts are top-notch, with Westover Elementary School and Woodlin Elementary being the best schools.

The Fillmore Silver Spring offers concerts that span musical genres and the Public Art Walk invites people to enjoy installations like sculptures, murals, and more throughout the city.

Arlington, VA

Directly across the Potomac from DC, Arlington has ample job opportunities, great educational institutions, and plenty to see and do.

The city also has a crime rate that’s 61 percent lower than the national average and an unemployment rate of 2.8 percent.

The average school test scores in Arlington are 25% higher than the national average. Higher education options include Marymount, George Mason, and Strayer universities.

Bethesda, MD

Bethesda offers easy access to bustling metropolitan areas while giving residents a cozy small-town feel.

It’s a vibrant and culturally diverse place with a well-educated population. The schools are esteemed, there’s a chance for enrichment at the many arts and cultural institutions, and many tech and healthcare companies operate out of the area.

As with other areas close to DC, the cost of living is a bit higher than average. However, job opportunities for higher paying jobs are available here, making the overall cost of living feel more affordable.
